1             INTRODUCTION

Yet another busy year for Bob Dylan. No less than three art exhibitions, one in Milan and two in London. The Never-Ending tour hit North America in the Spring and Summer and Europe in the autumn. No new album but two major record releases  all the same, the 10th volume of the Bootleg Series, Another Self Portrait and then the the career spanning box The Complete Album Collection Vol. One consisting of all regular Bob Dylan album releases and two discs with maerial from Greatest Hits and Biograph, all in all 47 CDs! During the last days of the year Sony Music again rushed out an extremely limited release in Europe with recordings from 1963 to extend their copyright ownership, this time on 6 vinyl LPs.

3             THE 2013 CALENDAR

5 February

Art exhibition of 23 new and previously unseen paintings by Bob Dylan, The New Orleans Series opens at Palazzo Reale, Milan, Italy. It remained open until 10 March.

27 March

Paul Williams, author of many books on Bob Dyaln and founder of the first journal of serious rock music criticism, “Crawdaddy”, dies.

5 April

This year’s first tour starts in Buffalo, New York. The tour covers mainly the East of US. This show features First live performance of What Good Am I? since St. Herblain, France, 1 July 2010.

6 April

The setlist played at the next show in Amherst, Massachusetts turns out to be a template for the shows during this tour. Exactly the same setlist was used in 12 more shows and only slight variations were used in the other shows.

20 April

On Record Store Day Columbia releases a vinyl single with two tracks from the forthcoming Bootleg Series Vol. 10. See also section 4.3.

5 May

After 22 concerts the Spring tour ends in St. Augustine, Florida.

15 May

Bob Dylan is inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, marking the first time a musician has been chosen as an honorary member for the prestigious award. "I feel extremely honored and very lucky to be included in this pantheon of great individual artists who comprise the Academy of Arts and Letters," Dylan, who was unable to attend the induction in person, said in a statement read at the ceremony. "I look forward to meeting all of you some time soon."

4 June

Bob Dylan is nominated for France's top distinction, the Legion d'Honneur, an award previously given to Sir Paul McCartney.

26 June

A Summer tour called AmericanaramA Festival Of Music starts in West Palm Beach, Florida. Duquesne Whistle is played live for the first time and is now added to the setlist which remains pretty static also during this tour. For more info on this tour please refer to section 5.5.4.

27 June

Bob Dylan is inducted into the Berlin Academy of Arts, in the category of film & media instead of music.

30 June

Duke Robillard plays his last concert with Bob Dylan in Nashville, Tennessee. The reasons for Duke leaving the band remain unclear, on his Facebook page Duke writes that “All I can say that it wasn’t for musical reasons …” However there is indications that Dylan is deeply dissatisfied with Duke Robillard’s long solos lately.

2 July

Charlie Sexton fills Duke Robillard’s place temporarily starting in Memphis, Tennessee.

10 July

The show in St. Paul, Minnesota sees the live debut of Susie Baby that was played as a tribute to Bobby Vee who attended this show. Song 14 in the set- is from now on sometimes features a cover.

14 July

The Richard Thompson song 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is played as song 14 at the show in Clarkston, Michigan.

15 July

Colin Davis joins the band as lead guitarist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, replacing Charlie Sexton. For a more detailed listing of the lead guitar player, please refter to section 5.2. The traditional song Twelve Gates To The City is played as song 14.

19 July

The song Let Your Light Shine On Me by Blind Willie Johnson is played as song 14 at the show in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

24 July

The Weight by Robbie Robertson is played as song 14 at the show in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is played three more times during this tour.

4 August

The Summer Tour ends with a show in Mountain View, California.

24 August

Another Bob Dylan art exhibition named Face Value opens at the National Portrait Gallery in London. It features twelve never before seen works created by Dylan and scheduled to close 12 January 2014.

26 August

The 10th volume of The Bootleg Series, Another Self Portrait, is released. For a detailed description see section 4.4.

10 October

The European Fall Tour dates kicks off in Oslo, Norway. Again a fairly static set-list is used. Long And Wasted Years is played live for the first time. For more info on this tour please refer to section 5.6.

27 October

Lou Reed dies.

6 November

After 18 shows during this tour with more or less the same setlist, in Rome, Italy Dylan suddenly decides to play a completely new concert. No less than 16 new songs (94%) compared to the previous concert and 15 new songs for this tour. No songs at all from Tempest!

7 November

Still no songs from Tempest during the show in Rome, Italy the next day. This show features 13 new songs compared to yesterdays concert and 10 new songs for this tour.

8 November

Back to normal, the setlist played in Padova, Italy is again the same as before and there is no more surprise shows during this tour.

13 November

Bob Dylan receives the prestigious Legion d'Honneur award from France's minister of culture, Aurelie Filippetti. “Thank you, I am both humble and proud,” said Bob.

16 November

Yet another exhibition of Bob Dylan's art opens at the Halcyon Gallery in London. This show, called Mood Swings consists of welded gates, wall hangings and tables, as well as an assortment of other new and previously seen pieces of his visual art. These include original paintings from the Drawn Blank, Asia and New Orleans Series as well as new Revisionist Art magazine covers and a set of Gangster Doors (being rusted car doors riddled by bullet holes, with accompanying photos and text). Also on offer is a series called Side Tracks, consisting of variations of the Train Tracks image, each given the date and place of a Dylan concert as its title. A huge new oil painting on canvas is said to be the final version of the Train Tracks motive.

24 November

The last song on Tempest, Roll On John, is also the last song at the shov in Blackpool, England, making it this year’s last live debut. It alsoplayed the next night in London, England, but dropped from the last two concerts.

27-29 November

The Fall tour ends with three concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, the very same venue that saw the last concerts of the 1966 World Tour and leading to speculations that these concets really are farewell concerts marking the end of the Never-Ending Tour.

2 December

Bob Dylan is placed under judicial investigation in France for allegedly provoking ethnic hatred of Croats. It follows a legal complaint lodged by a Croat association in France over a 2012 interview Dylan gave to Rolling Stone magazine. In the interview he allegedly compared the relationship between Jews and Nazis to that of Serbs and Croats. The singer, 72, was served notice of the investigation last month.

4 December

Release of the 6-LP set 50th Anniversary Collection 1963. For details see section 4.6.

Sony Music therefore 2 December 2013 released an extremely limited European only 6 LP set of outtakes, private and live recordings from 1963. The album was sold only through selected stores in England, Germany, France and Sweden. The set was limited to probably no more than a hundred copies.
