4.2 The New Basement Tapes: Lost On The River
4.4 50th Anniversary Collection 1964
This year started with a recording session in
Capitol Records Studio in Los Angeles, resulting in the Shadows in The Night album released a year later. This year The
Never-Ending Tour visited Asia, Europe, Australia and of course the US. In
November there were two major releases, The New Basement Tapes. Lost On The River and Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes.
Both are detailed in chapter 4. Finally in December Sony Music again rushed out
an extremely limited release in Europe with recordings from 1964 to extend
their copyright ownership, this time on 9 mini LPs.

February-March |
Dylan and the touring band
records what will be known as Bob Dylan’s Sinatra record, Shadows In The Night, in the same Capitol Studio
in Los Angeles, used by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee and other
Capitol artists in the fifties. For further
information please refer to the corresponding session page. |
31 March |
This year’s first tour
starts in Tokyo, Japan. It is followed by no less that eight more concerts in the same venue, making
it one of Dylan’s longest recidencies ever. |
4 April |
This night Huck’s Tune is played live for the
first time. It will return to the set four four
times but will later be dropped. |
26, 29 April |
The tour ends with two shows
in Hawaii, in Maui and Honolulu. |
6 June |
Carolyn Dennis and Bob
Dylan’s daughter Desirée Dennis-Dylan marries Kayla
Sampson in a same.sex marriage in Long Beach,
California. |
16 & 17 June |
This year’s Summer tour in
Europe starts with two shown i Ireland, the first in Cork,
and next the day after in Dublin. Setlist remains unchained is played with one small
variation on 14 this tour’s shows. |
20 June |
After two days the tour
continues in Istanbul,
Turkey, a city that Bob Dylan last played in 2010. |
23 June |
The audience in Athens, Greece
is treated to a short but different set including the last 2014 version of Huck’s Tune and a rare outing of Million Miles. |
5 July |
Bob Dylan plays the Festiwal Legend Rocka 08 in Slupsk, Poland. A very different set is featured mostly
including sixties’s songs and the first version of Lonesome Day Blues since Canton, Ohio 5
November 2009. |
11 July |
Another different setlist is
played during Stavernfestivalen in Stavern, Norway, with the only 2014 version of Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go
Mine). |
17 July |
The Summer tour in Europe
ends with a short set at the Pori Jazz Festivak in
Pori, Finland. |
9, 10 August |
The first tour Down Under since
April 2011 starts with two shows in Hamilton, New Zealand. The second show in Hamilton
features the setlist that will be used for another 16 shows during this tour. |
27 August |
The second half of the main
set in Brisbane, Queensland,
Australia is quite different from the standard set. |
10 September |
Dylan and the band returns
to New Zealand for a last show in Christchurch. |
17 October |
For the first time this year
Dylan tours the US, starting in Seattle,
Washington. Three different setlists are
used as follows: Set A: 17-25 October, 6
shows Set B: 26-30 October, 4
shows Set C: 1 November – 3

The last show in Los Angeles, California sees the live debut of Stay With Me, a song by Jerome Moross and Carolyn Leigh. Stay With Me was the main theme in the 1963
film The Cardinal. Recorded by Frank Sinatra 3 December 1963 and released two
years later on the album Sinatra ’65.
Bob Dylan recorded this song during the Shadown In
The Night sessions in February. The song was played as encore during the rest
of the tour. |

4.4.1 Background
This
release was like the two previous year, triggered by
European copyright laws which would pass these recordings onto public domain
unless Sony claims ownership by releasing them one way or another. Sony
Music therefore 8 December 2014 released an extremely limited European only 9
mini-LP set of studio outtakes and live recordings from 1964. The album was
sold only through selected stores in England, Germany, France and Sweden. The
set was limited to 1,000 copies. All
tracks are of course unreleased and the following are new to collectors: -
all tracks from Royal
Festival Hall, London, England 17 May 1964 except Mr. Tambourine Man & Eternal Circle. -
