84 performances in North America and Europe, Dylan’s first triple-CD studio album, a 9-disc Bootleg Series, and the official acceptance of his Nobel Prize in Literature with a Nobel Lecture are highlights of another productive year.

2           2017 AT A GLANCE

3           THE 2017 CALENDAR

7 January

Music critic and Village Voice journalist Nat Hentoff, an early proponent of Dylan who authored the liner notes for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and interviewed him in 1965 for Playboy, dies in New York City at the age of 91.

14 January

Bob Dylan’s grandson (Jakob’s son), 22-year-old Levi, joins TJE’s Fall-Winter fashion show in Milan, Italy as a runway model.

18 January

An “astonished” blogger and amateur photographer notes that his 2009 photograph of Blackpool Pier in England is the likely template for Dylan’s “Norfolk, Virginia Pier 2015-16” that was exhibited as part of The Beaten Path at the Halcyon Gallery in Mayfair in 2016.

31 January

“I Could Have Told You” off of Triplicate is released on YouTube, the release date of which is announced as March 31st.

17 February

10 March

“Stardust” off of Triplicate is released on rollingstone.com.

18 March

Rock & Roll pioneer Chuck Berry dies at the age of 90.

22 March

New interview with Bill Flanagan published on bobdylan.com in order to promote Triplicate; of the album’s 3-CD format, Dylan offers: “it’s the number of completion. It’s a lucky number, and it’s symbolic of light.”

27 March

Two of  Bob Dylan works of juvenilia, “Good Poem” and “Bad Poem” from 1956, are auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York.

28 March

The Bob Dylan Archive at the Helmerich Center for American Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma opens to scholars engaged in qualified research projects. Plans for a future accessible-to-the-public Bob Dylan Center, also in Tulsa, continue.

31 March

Bob Dylan’s first 3-CD album, Triplicate, recorded in February 2016, is released by Columbia Records.

1 April

A 28-date tour of Europe begins with two nights in Stockholm with the same band as in 2016 and with minimal set-list variation from the last tour

While in Stockholm for the tour, Dylan receives the Nobel Prize for Literature from the Swedish Academy during a private meeting with Academy members in an unrevealed location.

14 April

Guitarist, musician, and Dylan collaborator, Bruce Langhorne, who performed on Bringing It All Back Home and Pat Garret & Billy the Kid, dies in Venice, California at the age of 78. After seeing Langhorne playing a large tambourine, Dylan was inspired to write “Mr. Tambourine Man” in 1964. Langhorne donated that very tambourine and other memorabilia to the Bob Dylan Archive.

In Port Chester, New York, Dylan begins a 28-night tour of the East Coast of the United States and across Canada (including Michigan and Wisconsin dates); this includes, in Dover Delaware, his first show without Sinatra-inspired songs since the Desert Trip shows of 2016, although he returns to the Sinatra material in the following performance and exhibits very little set-list variation.

17 June

4           NEW RELEASES

4.1       Triplicate

This 3-CD set, containing more songs from the 1940s and 1950s, was recorded February 2016 in the famous Studio B in Capitol Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, the same location as the recordings for Shadows In The Night and Fallen Angels. Frank Sinatra recorded his great Capitol albums in the 50s in this studio.

All songs, except Braggin', were once recorded by Frank Sinatra.

The CDs have subtiles suggesting common themes:

CD 1: ‘Til The Sun Goes Down.

CD 2: Devil Dolls.

CD 3: Comin’ Home Late

The format can of course be seen as a tribute to the 3-LP release Trilogy by Frank Sinatra where the LPs have the subtitles Past, Present and Future. Trilogy was recorded July, August, September and December 1979 and released 1980.

Triplicate was released on 31 March 2017. For further details please refer to the session page for February 2016.

4.2.7   The stage sermons

Dylan started delivering long talks, sermons if you will, during the gospel tours 1979-1981. An example can be found here: Tempe, Arizona 25 November 1979. Not one single syllable of Bob Dylan’s talk is included on Trouble No More! Instead sermons are included between the tracks in the DVD Musical Film. The sermons are written by Luc Sante and presented by Michael Shannon and bear no resemblance to any of Dylan’s stage raps.
