6 the never-ending tour: SEcond Year

6.1 Introduction

The never-ending tour 1989 consists of three parts:

1. The first leg in Europe, May-June

2. The second leg in the US, July-September

3. The third leg on the US East, Coast October-November

These parts will be referred to as leg 1 2 and 3 below.

The 1989 tour saw two major changes, Dylan started to play harmonica again, both in the acoustic and the electric set, and Kenny Aaronson had to leave suddenly after just a few shows in Europe to have an operation in the US. He was replaced, permanently it seems, by Tony Garnier.

6.2 The Musicians

Ringo Starr helped Christopher Parker in Frejus on Highway 61 Revisited and Like A Rolling Stone. Van Morrison joined in Athens and sang two own songs from Moondance: And It Stoned Me and Crazy Love.

Songs

The second song turned out to be "the surprise slot". A number of covers were played here, but also during the second electric set. The following covers were played once or twice:

Confidential, House Of Gold, Lonesome Town, Making Me Believe, My True Lala, Pancho And Lefty, Peace In The Valley, The Water Is Wide, When Did You Leave Heaven?, You Don't Know Me, Give My Love To Rose in a the special acoustic->electric treatment and finally an exciting full band version of Trail Of The Buffalo.

Every Grain Of Sand was tried twice once electric, once acoustic.

As usual Dylan played Man Gave Names To All The Animals in France.

Only electric version of Tangled Up In Blue during this tour.

And in Patras, Greece, Dylan decided it was time to play Tears Of Rage!
