Back in Europe after just three weeks break, things are getting slightly better. The band is starting to sound a little tighter and once again the setlists get a little more varied with an occasional cover and some unusual songs. Dylan continues to play the electric piano now and then, but in Stuttgart something happens. After a completely horrid New Morning with random piano attacks, totally unconnected with the song being played, Dylan abolishes the piano for the rest of 1991. Then, in the same show, he changes the show format somewhat. There are two extra songs in the first electric set, only four in the second. I Shall Be Released & Like A Rolling Stone are dropped from the set from now on (with a few exceptions in South America). This is the first show since Cuyahoga Falls June 21, 1988 without Like A Rolling Stone. From now on Ballad Of A Thin Man becomes the standard last encore.

Songs

When I Paint My Masterpiece opens the first show in Rome. First time Copenhagen Sept 21, 1987 w/ Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Homeward Bound, the Paul Simon song, is the second surprise in Rome. This is the first version ever. It is done acoustic here, but Bob also tries it during the second electric set in Innsbruck.

People Putting People Down is the third surprise in Rome. This is a song by John Prine.

I Want You is the final Rome surprise. It is done acoustic as the only encore for the evening!

Man Of Peace gets a rare airing in Bologna. It’s the only 1991 appearance. This evening we also get Under The Red Sky, the last 1991 appearance.

Here's a song about ... Sometimes, like just today, somebody was coming to my hotel and stopped me on the street and he grabbed me around the shoulders and said "Mr. Zimmerman!" (pronounced with thick German accent!) These kind of things kind of shake a person up sometimes. And long ago somebody did the same thing. He didn't know me and he got run over by a street-car, in the middle of the street. It was a sad thing, but there wasn't anything for me to do but go back and write this song. And after it was written, that's when it was sung! (before Don't Think Twice in Munich).
