7.8.4     Comments

After these nine shows Tony Garnier is the musician who has played most shows with Dylan ever: 266. Christopher Parker did 263 and G.E Smith 241.

Venues varied from a 1500 seater in Sao Paolo to a 30,000 stadium in Belo Horizonte with 8,000 attending. Ticket prices corresponded roughly to six months salaries for the poorer part of the population! Attendees in Sao Paolo were described as belonging to "the Mercedes crowd". Dylan gave four or possibly five press conferences!

Songs

People Get Ready

written by Curtis Mayfield, played during the Rolling Thunder rehearsals in 1975, recorded by Dylan in November 1989 for the Flashback movie, never before played live.

It's Too Late (She’s Gone)

This is the Chuck Willis song recorded by Derek & The Dominos on the Layla album.

People Putting People Down

this is the John Prine song that Dylan played in Rome earlier this year.

When Did You Leave Heaven?

this chestnut from Down In The Groove made occasional appearances in 1989 and 1990.

Ring Them Bells

maybe the biggest surprise! It is the only song on Oh Mercy that has been played only once before, in Poughkeepsie, October 1989, then totally unrehearsed with Dylan on piano.

Like A Rolling Stone

I Shall Be Released

Two old war horses that were dropped in Europe but   now each made an odd return to the set.

[1] a show is unique if no other show has the same songs in the same order.

[2] a show is different from another show if the set of songs are different, regardless of order.

[3] electric and acoustic versions are counted as different songs.

[4] a song is counted as unique regardless of how it is performed.

[5] variation is computed as the quote between number of different songs and mean number of performed songs.
