7        the never-ending tour CONTINUES

7.1       Introduction

For the eight year in a row Bob Dylan spent a good deal of his time on the road. This is also the sixth year of the Never-Ending Tour. Rumours in late 1992 had it that Dylan would take a long break. In the end he decided to give it another year. This year he played 80 concerts that up till the joint tour with Santana in the Fall kept getting longer and longer, some over 2 1/2 hours.

The artistic quality from 1992 was maintained and in general the shows got better and better during the year. Seasoned Dylan followers characterized the last show of the year at The Supper Club as Dylan's best show ever!

The 1993 part of The Never-Ending Tour consisted of five new "legs":

7.4.4     Comments

For the third time in four years Dylan tours Europe in February, and as usual a set of shows in London at Hammersmith Apollo (formerly Odeon) is included. The set is pretty much the same as at the end of 1992, but two songs from Good As I Been To You, "Jim Jones" and "Tomorrow Night" are now included in the acoustic set. For the first time during The Never-Ending Tour (?) there is a pre-planned light-show, which might explain the small variety in the set list from night to night. At the last show in Belfast one more song from "Under The Red Sky" is

played live for the first time: "Born In Time".

Recommended shows

London 11 February, Paris 23 February.

Guests

Dave Stewart joined the band in London on February 9 and 13 both times to play electric guitar on Highway 61 Revisited.

In Eindhoven a girl from the audience, Liz Souissi from Bern, manage to get on stage and help Dylan sing The Times They Are A-Changin'.

Selected BobTalk

Tonight's show we'll be playing for Nick The Chef. Nick The Chef, he's out there somewhere, this whole show's for him. (after Jim Jones, London 7 February).

This is the bass solo here, give Tony a hand, he's gonna play a solo. This has been rehearsed like a hundred times, we're gonna get rid of this guy. (during Don't Think Twice, where Dylan wasn't too happy with the band, London 7 February).

Thanks everybody! You know we've played this song a million times, but it was just like the first time now. (after The Times They Are A-Changin', London 7 February).

For more BobTalk please consult the session pages for this tour.

[1] a show is unique if no other show has the same songs in the same order

[2] a show is different from another show if the set of songs are different, regardless of order

[3] electric and acoustic versions are counted as different songs

[4] a song is counted as unique regardless of how it is performed

[5] variation is computed as the quote between number of different songs and mean number of performed songs
